Carey Mulligan gives us chills in this new ‘Suffragette’ clip

Next Friday, Suffragette — the highly-anticipated film about the fight for women’s suffrage in the UK — hits theaters here in the US, and we couldn’t be more excited. The teaser released back in April gave us chills; the full-length trailer released earlier this summer only heightened our anticipation; and now, we have a brand new clip that has us next level excited.

In the film, the legendary Meryl Streep plays Emmeline Pankhurst, the incredibly badass activist and feminist who helped champion women’s voting rights in the UK; alongside Carey Mulligan as Maud Watts, a wife and young mother who becomes a “foot soldier” for the movement. (The film also stars Helena Bonham Carter, amongst many other talented actors — so it’s guaranteed to be amazing.)

The clip shows an intimate moment between Maud (Mulligan) and her husband, where she shares how excited she is about the possibility of gaining the right to vote. Her spouse is quick to shoot down her excitement — less than thrilled that his wife would even entertain the idea, let alone want to be involved in making it happen. But it’s obvious something is brewing, and his words aren’t going to hold Maud back from fighting tooth and nail for equality.

While Suffragette has recently received some backlash after a less-than-tasteful photo shoot with Time Out London, we still have high hopes for the film and the message behind it. It remains as important as ever that we highlight the many women who fought for gender equality in our past — especially so we can inspire a new generation of feminists that will fight to keep it that way in the future.

Check out the clip for yourself below, and Suffragette when it hits theaters October 23.
