You’re not alone: This study reveals that millennials are having less sex across the board

In a strange turn of events, studies have shown that millennials are having less sex than the previous generation was at their age. According to the Archives of Sexual Behavior, when compared to their parents and other adults born in the 1960s, double the amount of ’90s-born millennials (18 years and older) have zero sexual partners.

It’s got nothing to do with their level of attractiveness or sexiness, though.

In fact, the Washington Post is finding that millennials are just too busy to chase after sex these days. They instead feel as though they have more important things to worry about. For instance, an 18-year-old web designer named Noah Patterson told the Washington Post that companionship with women may be enjoyable, but it’s not the top priority for him at the moment.

“I’d rather be watching YouTube videos and making money,” asserted Patterson. “[Sex is] not going to be something people ask you for on your résumé.”

This doesn’t surprise Helen Fisher, a biological anthropologist at Rutgers University and chief scientific adviser to Match.com. She says this age group represents a “highly motivated, ambitious generation,” so this essentially means that they don’t want to distract themselves too often.

Fisher’s description may explain why the baby boomer generation had an average of 11 sexual partners, Gen X had 10, and millennials have 8. A lot of this might relate to the fact that millennials are simply more attached to theirs phone and laptop screens, when compared to prior generations. Norman Spack, associate clinical professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School, actually states that these electronics might be getting in the way:

“The nature of communication now is anti-sexual. People are not spending enough time alone just together. There’s another gorilla in the room: It’s whatever is turned on electronically.”

Experts also want to remind everyone that waiting to have sex is definitely not a bad thing. In fact, it might demosntrate that women are feeling more confident than ever, since they’re possibly feeling that they can take charge and say no when they simply don’t want to have sex. Besides, holding off on getting down and dirty might contribute to a stronger, longer-lasting relationship.

In the end, regardless of how much sex you’re having, just keep in mind there’s no right answer — as long as you’re doing what feels right for you.
