Study finds women charged more than men for same product
A recent study from the New York Consumer Affairs Board has found that, on average, women pay more than what men pay 42 percent of the time for the same thing.
The study, titled “From Cradle to Cane: The Cost of Being a Female Consumer,” compared about 800 products with “male” and “female” versions from over 90 brands sold both online and in stores in New York. The products targeted for women were, on average, priced 7 percent higher than the equivalent products for men. For example, refills for a purple “Hydro Silk” Schick razor (for women) cost $18.99, while the blue “Hydro 5” Schick refills (for men) cost $14.99. The largest price discrepancy found was in haircare products like shampoo and conditioner, where products for women were 45% more expensive than those for men.
According to the Department of Consumer Affairs:
So basically, in addition to being paid less on average, women have to pay more for basic goods.
