10 thrilling and chilling reads to help you celebrate Season 2 of “Stranger Things”

Season 2 of Stranger Things hits Netflix at 12:01 a.m. tomorrow, and we can’t WAIT. In preparation for this epic Halloween weekend viewing fest, we re-watched Season 1 and baked Stranger Things desserts. Plus, thanks to a cool Stranger Things Spotify feature, we even turned our computer screens into the Upside Down. But it’s STILL not enough. All the Missing Girls combines just about every thriller plot you can think of. It’s about the disappearances of not one, but two young women. There are shocking twists aplenty. And on top of it, the story is told in reverse. *wipes brow*

2. The Dark Tower I: Gunslinger by Stephen King

You didn’t think we would make a Stranger Things reading list and leave off Stephen King, did you? This is the Dark Tower book that sparked a series of eight titles. Back in 1982, King introduced us to Roland Deschain. If you’ve ever wanted to get into Dark Tower series, this is the perfect place to start.

3. Once Gone by Blake Pierce

Love a good badass lady cop? Allow us to introduce you to Special Agent Riley Paige. She’s trying to find a serial killer who keeps murdering women in increasingly grotesque ways. The only problem is that Paige is also battling some demons in her mind. And sometimes, things get a little blurry.

4. The Passenger by Lisa Lutz

Tanya Dubois is a woman with a plan. Just two days after leaving her husband’s body, she withdraws a ton of cash, dyes her hair, and runs. As she bounces from city to city, Tanya — err, now she goes by Amelia — tries her hardest to stay off the grid. Will Amelia — sorry, we mean Debra — be able to outrun her past?

5. It by Stephen King

This is the story that everyone’s still talking about. If you loved the movie but never read the book, we highly recommend you remedy that ASAP. What better time of year to meet the evil without a name than Halloween?

6. Cause to Kill by Blake Pierce

What can we say? Blake Pierce is a pro at writing complex female detectives who are trying to catch serial killers. If you’ve ever wanted to get into the Avery Black Mysteries, which follow Homicide Detective (and former criminal defense attorney) Avery Black, start with Cause to Kill. You’ll thank us later.

7. Keep You Close by Lucie Whitehouse

Let’s be real: Some of the best thrillers take place in the U.K. If you agree, you’ll love Keep You Close. It follows Rowan, a woman trying to discover the truth about her estranged friend Marianne’s death. The more she searches for clues, the more twisted the story gets.

8. Placebo by Steven James

Placebo has one of the most unique synopses we’ve read in a long time. It tells the story of Jevin, a former illusionist-turned-filmmaker who gets involved in a conspiracy with a pharmaceutical company. Jevin is investigating a controversial neurological research program and wants answers about why his family died so tragically. Don’t worry, you can still keep up even if you’re not hip to all of the scientific terminology. Intrigued? While you’re at it, pick up Singularity, James’ follow-up book.

9. Wind River by Tom Morrisey

Wind River isn’t your traditional horrific thriller with killers, blood, guts, and gore. But it’s still chilling in its own way. Wind River tells the story of Ty, a man with fond childhood memories of fly fishing in Wyoming. After he returns from war, Ty struggles with PTSD and long-buried secrets. Tom Morrisey’s story is rich, captivating, and beautifully crafted.

10. The Dark Tower II: The Drawing of the Three by Stephen King

Confession: We couldn’t pick just one (or two) Stephen King books for this list. Another confession: We couldn’t pick just one book from his Dark Tower series either. After you devour The Gunslinger, get into The Drawing of the Three. Trust us on this one!
