Dacre Montgomery’s “Stranger Things” audition tape is so bonkers, it deserves its own Netflix series
When Season 2 of Stranger Things hit Netflix, it was clear from the get-go that the Duffer Brothers had upped the ante in every way. From even more ’80s references — and ’80s hit actors — to a bigger, darker monster to a more cinematic feel, it’s safe to say Stranger Things 2 was bigger and bolder than the show’s first installment.
But in making the monster of the Upside Down even bigger, the brothers also added a human villain into the fold in Billy (Dacre Montgomery), one of the most divisive characters on the series.
While serving up *serious* Rob Lowe from St. Elmo’s Fire looks, Billy’s main purpose is to terrorize his little stepsister Max (Sadie Sink) and mostly reformed asshole Steve Harrington (Joe Keery). While Steve’s tenure as Stranger Things Bad Boy was relatively short-lived — as he seems to have grown a lot by the end of the first season — Billy makes early season one Steve seem like Bob Newby.
It takes a certain kind of person to be able to switch from charming a lonely Mrs. Wheeler to straight-up almost beating Steve to death.
So when we heard about Dacre Montgomery’s *wild* audition tape — in which he allegedly danced in a g-string — we knew we needed to see this ASAP. Luckily, Montgomery released the audition tape to GQ and he is serving up some seriously terrifying Billy vibes.

Montgomery told GQ that he wanted to make an impression with the Duffer brothers because he knew how competitive the casting would be, so he went all in for the tape — minus the mullet, of course.
"I got up, kinda went crazy, shaved all my hair off around my face except for my mustache, and then rang two friends who are still studying at the acting university that I went to here in Perth. I was like, ‘Can you help read for me behind the camera tonight?' he revealed. “Then, during the day, I made everything else happen — the dancing and the rest, going out in the G-string and just playing around with it, and putting it together on iMovie and doing all that sort of stuff.
The audition definitely contains the many sides of Billy we see during the second season — from making some pretty terrifying threats to amping himself up — and honestly, it’s kind of terrifying.
As much as we *hate* Billy — how dare he nearly kill Steve and terrorize Max and Lucas — we’re very curious to see what Billy is up to in Season 3 because honestly we need to see more from Dacre Montgomery.
