Storm Reid bonded with Chris Pine over food while filming A Wrinkle In Time — and sends GIFs to Ava DuVernay every day

To Storm Reid, A Wrinkle in Time heroine Meg Murry is both a Disney Princess and a superhero, and you know what? She’s not wrong.

In the Ava DuVernay-helmed epic, the teen travels through time and space on an intergalactic mission to save her father (Chris Pine) – and in turn, her planet — from an impending darkness. Flanked by her little brother Charles Wallace, friend Calvin O’Keefe, and the three celestial beings guiding them — played by Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, and Oprah Winfrey — Meg faces her biggest fears and ventures into the unknown, and comes out on top.

Ahead of the film’s release on DVD and digital, Storm Reid spoke with HelloGiggles on the phone, opening up about filming in New Zealand, Oprah Winfrey’s sage advice on fame, and whether or not she’d want to reprise her role as Meg Murry in one of Madeleine L’Engle’s Time Quintet sequels.

HelloGiggles: Now that the movie’s been out for a little bit and is about to be released on DVD, how has the positive response to it affected you?

Storm Reid: It’s just so amazing to see…that have seen it and loved it, be inspired by the message behind the film and kind of relate to the film and see themselves represented and included within the film. I’ve been getting some very positive and great feedback. So I’m glad and I’m really grateful that I’m able to be a part of such an amazing film.

HG: How does it feel to be such an inspiration for girls and boys all over the world who watched you go on this magical journey?

SR: Yes, I feel like it’s very important and I’m so blessed to have the responsibility to be able to inspire a lot of young people. To just let them know that they can do anything that they want to do and that they can save the world in their own way. And they can embrace their light from within their selves to save the world.

HG: How have you changed since the movie first came out? You went on this huge world tour promoting the movie, so are you a total diva now? You can say that you are.

SR: [laughs] No, I haven’t changed at all. Miss Oprah actually told me that I wasn’t going to change with all this stuff happening right now. But the people around me were going to change, and I was just going to be able to identify my real friends and the people that actually really do care about me. I haven’t changed at all. I’m still the regular same Storm from Atlanta, Georgia.

HG: What was it like for you to work with four amazing, really powerful women in Ava DuVernay, Mindy Kaling, Reese Witherspoon, and Oprah Winfrey?

SR: They were so amazing and I’m so glad to have them in my life now and be able to work with them. What was really amazing and they’re all so talented, but on a personal level, being able to learn from them and have them to learn from was such a blessing. I’m glad that I get the best of both worlds.

HG: Have you kept in touch with them since the movie’s release?

SR: Yes, I have! Miss Ava and I, my mom, we all have a group chat where we send gifs to each other throughout the day. I stayed in touch with Miss Reese and Miss Mindy and I actually sent Miss Oprah a letter a few days ago. I’m glad that I still have them in my corner.

HG: Would you want to collaborate with them on a project again sometime in the future?

SR: Oh, absolutely. I call Miss Ava, Miss Reese, Miss Mindy, and Miss Oprah as my aunties now. So just to have Miss Oprah as your auntie, I think that’s pretty cool. But to be able to hopefully in the future be able to work with them again.

HG: So does that mean you’d maybe want to join the cast of Big Little Lies? I know they’re filming that right now.

SR: I mean, Meryl Streep is in that show now, which I feel like is so cool and I would love to work with her. So even if I was just able to visit on set, that would be really cool. But I mean, if the opportunity presents itself and it makes sense, then I would love to make maybe a cameo on Big Little Lies.

HG: Casual Wrinkle fans might not know this, but A Wrinkle in Time is the first of a whole series of books about Meg and the Murry family. Would you ever want to return for a sequel and play Meg when she’s a little bit older?

SR: Oh, yes. I don’t know if that’s gonna happen…but I think am Meg in a sense now. I would love to be older and be able to maybe revisit Meg and see how she grows with Charles Wallace and Calvin and see her relationship with her father. So that could be a cool idea.

HG: I know you read the book before being cast in the film. What was your favorite part from the novel that got brought to the screen? What was your favorite moment to bring to life from the book?

SR: I just love Meg’s journeys, even though as playing Meg, I was a whole other race than what she was written as in the book. I still got to portray her and I still got to tell her story and I still got to see her grow. Through that I was able to grow as a person and as a young teenager. So I’m glad that I was able to just show Meg’s story in that.

HG: While filming the movie, you were all over the world. I know you guys spent a lot of time in New Zealand. What was your favorite place to film? Or just the moment when you realized you were in this world?

SR: I loved it all and we shot for six months. We had such great moments every day. But I would say my favorite place to work was actually New Zealand and to be able to travel with what I call my family now. Travel with my family to New Zealand and be able to work and have fun and experience a whole new culture was amazing as well.

HG: The whole cornerstone surrounding [Meg’s] journey is her relationship with her dad and her trying to find her dad. What was it like having someone like Chris Pine play your dad?

SR: Oh, it was so awesome to work with Mr. Chris and he’s so focused. I mean just working with him was really cool and to be able to see how he connected with Meg and how he connected with Dr. Alex Murry. But also, he’s just a really cool person and we talked about hot sauce and pork rinds. So we had a good balance of work and then play.

HG: Did you guys do anything to bond, to get yourself in the father/daughter mindset?

SR: Yes. I think our stories about what we liked to eat. I think our food motivated most of our conversations. But we bonded a lot and I was able to rehearse with him as well before we started shooting, which helped our connection and our relationship grow.

HG: Now that you’re in with the Disney family, is there anything you want to do within Disney? Like join the Marvel family? Or Star Wars? Or play a live action princess?

SR: Well, I look at Meg as a princess, ’cause I mean she saved the world even though she doesn’t have a prince. And she doesn’t have super powers. In my eyes, she’s a princess and a superhero. But I would love to be in an action film and maybe be a superhero. I’m so glad and so fortunate to be a part of the Disney family.
