It’s time to stop talking about Selena Gomez and Justin Bieber, according to Selena

After an unbelievable 2015, there’s a lot for Selena Gomez to talk about. . . and there’s one person she’s done talking about.

In a brief interview with Rolling Stone, Selena discussed last year’s album, Revival, and her “grown-up” career at age 23. “When I heard [‘Good For You’], I freaked out,” she told the publication. “I felt confident and comfortable in who I am. I felt sexy. I was aching to do stuff like that.”

However, even during the major success of her latest album and her fantastic career evolution throughout 2015, the media — HelloGiggles included — constantly highlighted her past relationship with Justin Bieber following their breakup back in 2014. Because it was hard not to. The chemistry between the pop singers was magnetic, an intense ebb and flow that resulted in dramatic break-ups and Instagram posts announcing that they’ve gotten back together. Rooting for Jelena seemed right. Until it didn’t.

Since their final break-up, Justin has posted pictures of her (several times) and often mentioned her during interviews, saying that “her identity is in me,” that he’s “never going to stop loving her,” and that three songs off his latest album are about her (he even spray-painted her name in the music video of “What Do You Mean”). The media coverage of the two singers only intensified after the two sang a duet together and even were seen various times throughout the year, most notably when he serenaded her in public with the song “My Girl” shortly  before the AMAs.

But while Justin seems quite open about his adoration for Selena, Selena is tired of talking about it, as she mentioned in the Rolling Stone interview. When the topic of the serenading inevitably came up, Selena said, short and sweet:

She also mentioned that, despite the fact that the Instagram video of Justin singing to Selena hit the Internet shortly before the AMAs, it didn’t make the ceremony harder for her. “I don’t alter my life because of what people are going to talk about,” she told Rolling Stone. “If I go and have a great time, I live my life and nothing is going to dictate how I feel unless I let it.”

When asked about the fact that people will assume some of her songs — such as “Same Old Love,” for example — are about a specific relationship even if they aren’t, Selena noted that she understood that:

Selena has spoken up in the past about her desire to stop talking about Justin in interviews, such as back in November, when she told InStyle, “It’s really hard because I’m a nice person. I’m just tired of talking about it. I never intended for my life to become a tabloid story.”

Though Selena is a major celebrity, and celebrity relationships — past and present — are often put under the microscope in the media, she’s has made an incredibly important point. No one should have to refuse, over and over again, to stop talking about their love life — especially if they have so many other amazing things to talk about in interviews (like their professional accomplishments for one).

Although it can be fascinating to invest ourselves in the personal lives and relationships of celebrities, perhaps we should be focusing on the individual artistic creativity of both artists, doing their own thing. Selena, for example, has been kicking ass with Revival; Justin just broke an amazing record previously held by Elvis Presley and The Beatles after he replaced his own song as number one in the UK. These two musicians are crushing it — and we applaud their success and their talents.

So, it seems to be pretty clear: Jelena is finished. But what’s not finished, and likely won’t be for a very, very long time? Selena and Justin’s careers. As separate entities.
