If you’re feeling down about the election results, Conan O’Brien actually just said the most profound thing and it could help

It’s not exactly news to say that a lot of people are feeling apprehensive — and some even outright fearful — about our country’s future right now.

But no matter how you’re feeling about this week’s election,  Conan O’Brien shared some post-election optimism, and it is was genuinely incredibly inspiring — no matter where you fall on the political spectrum.

People have actually been pretty good about spreading positive vibes; from Katy Perry’s post-election tweets to Hillary Clinton’s own message in a secret Facebook group. And Conan just added to the voices of positivity by adding some much needed historical perspective and emphasizing how lucky we Americans are to participate in democracy.

"We've been here before. We have had bitter, angry elections for 200 years [...]. The optimist in me chooses today to be happy that we have fair and free elections at all. I think it's an amazing thing, I really do."

This is an incredibly important point. Not only do we have the right to vote, but we get the chance to do it regularly and often — meaning that there is always the possibility of change. So many of us are so used to this fact that it’s hard to imagine any other reality.

"Everybody should feel grateful that we get to vote, and if we don't get our way, we have the chance to try again."

Well said, sir. Well said.

So if your preferred presidential candidate wasn’t elected this year, know that President Trump won’t be in the oval office forever. In four years the election will roll around again (along with many important local elections in between), and with them comes the ability to make change. And that’s important to keep in mind.

Now let’s move forward with confidence in our system and our voices!
