Steven Spielberg responded to Natalie Portman’s 2018 Golden Globes dig

When you think of notable directors, Steven Spielberg probably comes to mind. While he deserved his nomination at the 2018 Golden Globes for his film The Post, actress Natalie Portman — who presented the award that night — rightfully used her platform to remind those watching that every nominee this year was male.

“Here are the all-male nominees,” Portman stated before announcing Guillermo del Toro as the winner.

Spielberg was quick to acknowledge that change has to happen. The director spoke with Entertainment Tonight while at the National Board of Review dinner and made sure to acknowledge that there were many qualified, talented female directors who shouldn’t have been overlooked. The director noted that this is an unmatchable time in Hollywood, referring to the current movement as “powerful, a watershed for women, a watershed for men, who will learn to listen or those who have been listening.”

He believes women will be strongly recognized at the 2018 Oscars. Nominees will be officially announced later this month on January 23rd, according to Deadline.

"There’s also a watershed happening right now, slowly, maybe not fast enough, for women directors," Spielberg said after being asked about Portman's statement. "I mean you have Patty Jenkins. We have some amazing women that have come forward, you know Mudbound and Lady Bird. This is a pretty incredible year, and I think you'll be seeing some nominations. I’m predicting at the Oscars this year for a woman director, if not several."

Speaking of Jenkins, she also weighed in on Portman’s dig.

"It’s been a little glaring that women directors don’t get nominated so often and it is odd," she said to Entertainment Tonight while attending the same event. "Particularly when their films are being celebrated in every other way, so I thought it was interesting to highlight it. And what a difficult category to present without saying something about it, so she did it so perfectly."

We have our fingers crossed that we’ll see a more diverse list of nominees on January 23rd.
