The people have spoken: What Starbucks’ new tiramisu latte really tastes like
Picture holding a delicious, warm latte in your hands at this very moment. Now, imagine that latte tastes like tiramisu.
Wipe the drool off your face and pull out your wallet, because Starbucks just made that dream a reality. Over a year ago, the company began testing this perfect cup of awesomeness, and as of yesterday, it’s available for purchase, along with the returning Caramel Flan Latte.
After one customer (a.k.a. hero) suggested the concoction, Starbucks created it: steamed milk, mascarpone syrup, and espresso, topped with some cocoa espresso powder—to make it extra pretty.
Now, to me, this sounds like the drink from heaven, but I decided to let the Internet taste-test it first. Here’s what Thrillist had to say about the drink: “Sure enough, the first sip is a pure sugar rush. As the scent would suggest, this mainly tastes like the creamy middle portion of a standard tiramisu — which makes sense, since that’s got a ton of mascarpone in it. Of course there’s a hint of espresso, too, but it’s definitely driving backseat to this mascarpone milk. . .Unless you’ve got a major sweet tooth, you’re going to have a hard time adjusting to this guy.” Their verdict? Good on paper, way too sugary in practice.
OK, that’s just one opinion, and for the sake of research I needed more feedback, so I pulled together comments from both Twitter and this super-Starbucks-fan blog, StarbucksMelody. The consensus on the drink was decidedly mixed.
There were some who enjoyed it as much as I’d hoped:
There were some who, well, weren’t so thrilled with their purchase:
And some who compared the drink to pretty much anything but tiramisu.. . .

There are always going to be positive and negative reviews for anything, but this one did seem like a bit of a stretch, considering there were no ladyfingers involved in this equation. Unfortunately, it’s difficult to make something as simple as a coffee drink taste like a complex dessert, but hey, kudos to Starbucks for trying it. I’m going to give it a whirl no matter the reviews.
