Starbucks is majorly expanding its delivery service, and here’s everything we know
Anyone who has ever been hit with a sudden craving for a Pumpkin Spice Latte knows that your only choice for Starbucks delivery is to order through Postmates (and that’s only where Postmates is available). But that’s about to change, because in 2019 the coffee giant is bringing its Starbuck Delivers service to way more locations.
Starbucks announced the expansion of its door-to-door service on December 13th as part of its Investor Day. In a release summarizing its plans for the coming year, the company wrote that, in conjunction with Uber Eats, Starbucks Delivers will be launching at nearly a quarter of U.S. company-owned locations in 2019. There are nearly 14,300 Starbucks stores in America, so we can expect to see the service in many new places.
The brand has experimented with delivery before. In September, it partnered with Uber Eats to test Starbucks Delivers at more than 100 Florida locations. That same month, the company launched its delivery service in China, and currently, 2,000 stores across 30 cities in the country have access to the service. It has also been testing the service in Tokyo.
Since 2015, customers have been able to have get coffee brought straight to their homes via Postmates. But Starbucks Delivers is specifically tailored to bringing customers coffee. According to The Verge, in China, the service employs features like spill-proof lids, containers to keep drinks warm, and its own dedicated team of drivers. The Chinese version of Starbucks Delivers is operated in conjunction with a local delivery service, and hopefully the American version will involve some of the same innovations.
