Fans think Rey from Star Wars is headed to the dark side for this reason
From a Game of Thrones reunion in the Marvel Cinematic Universe to an epic-looking new animated movie, it’s been a huge week for Disney news. But there’s maybe nothing bigger than updates on Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. Fan theories have run rampant since the title was announced, and now that the studio has released more footage from the movie, fans have converged on one major plot theory: Rey moving to the dark side.
Our hearts can’t handle it, but we have to admit, there’s definitely evidence to support Dark Rey.
In the new, two-minute Rise of Skywalker trailer revealed at D23 by director J.J. Abrams, we start with throwback footage from the original three Star Wars movies, followed by the prequels. Notably, we get a glimpse of Sith Lord Darth Maul battling Obi-Wan Kenobi with his iconic double-sided, red lightsaber. (More on that in a second.)
Then, we skip ahead to the present, with Rey, Poe, Finn, and Chewie. There are glimpses of Carrie Fischer as Leia, a battle between Kylo Ren and Rey, and then…um…Rey in a black cloak wielding a double-sided, red lightsaber.
Needless to say, it sent Star Wars fans reeling.

Even Daisy Ridley, who plays Rey, seemed shocked that the trailer would include this footage.
"I went to Bad Robot yesterday and I was like, 'Hey, can I see the teaser'? They were like, 'Yeah, yeah.' No warning. And I watch, and went 'Oh my god, are you really putting that in there?' That was my reaction," Ridley told CinemaBlend. "And then watching it today, it was weird because I felt nervous with it coming because I knew it was going to be. And then hearing the audience reaction was amazing."
Some more evidence of Rey’s future came even before the new trailer. Remember, this isn’t the first Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker fan theory that has taken hold of the internet.
When the title was revealed and the first teaser dropped—and it seemed clear that the titular Skywalker could not be Rey—fans decided the title referred to Kylo Ren. Fans theorized that Kylo Ren, aka Ben Solo, would be moving from the dark side to the light.
It's called Rise of Skywalker because Kylo Ren is going to be redeemed and, due to his interest in symbolic name changes, instead of becoming Ben Solo again he will give himself a new, third name, Obi Wan Skywalker. Not considerate of his dad's ghost but when is he considerate

And because Rey and Kylo Ren are often portrayed as mirrors (sometimes quite literally), if he moves to the light side, it makes a lot of sense that Rey would go toward the dark.
What do you think? Is this a dark side fake-out, or is Rey really breaking bad? We won’t know for sure until Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker hits theaters December 20th.
