Oh my Porgs, “Star Wars” is going to release a *second* standalone trilogy
This just in, and this is HUGE: Rian Johnson may not be directing Star Wars: Episode IX but it seems he’ll be extending his stay in a galaxy far, far away. Lucasfilm just announced that The Last Jedi writer-director will be creating a *brand new* standalone Star Wars trilogy, and OH. MY. PORGS.
The Star Wars epicenter confirmed in a statement that the trilogy would be falling under the Star Wars banner but would follow a completely new set of characters introduced by Johnson, and would be set in a different part of the iconic galaxy than what we’ve seen before. So don’t expect to see a surprise appearances from Admiral Ackbar or Greedo!
“We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said, according to StarWars.com. “He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.
Johnson — whose first Lucasfilm and Disney collaboration The Last Jedi, is set for release in December — will write and direct the first installment of the trilogy, with Ram Bergman, Johnson’s longtime producing partner, on board to produce the project.
“We had the time of our lives collaborating with Lucasfilm and Disney on The Last Jedi, Johnson and Bergman said in a joint statement. “Star Wars is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can’t wait to continue with this new series of films.
After Colin Trevorrow stepped down from directing Star Wars: Episode IX, it was widely speculated that Johnson — who seemed like he was *literally* having the time of his life directing The Last Jedi — would be taking over the project. So it definitely came as a surprise when Johnson revealed that he wouldn’t be taking on Episode IX. Instead, J.J. Abrams — who directed and co-wrote The Force Awakens — would assume that role.
We’re so excited to see Johnson’s future with Lucasfilm and honestly, now we’re even MORE hyped to see The Last Jedi. We’ll get our first glimpse of all Johnson has in store for us when The Last Jedi opens in theaters on December 15th.
