Everything we know about the new ‘Star Wars’ movie, ‘Rogue One’
Come in, Rogue One. Do you copy? Because we’ve got to tell you all about the first official image of the movie, so appropriately titled, Rogue One. It’s the first movie of Star Wars’ new anthology series, but even that’s gotten a little makeover since the last time we checked in with the Rebel Alliance. Rogue One is now considered “A Star Wars Story” meaning that it’s part of the greater SW universe, but not directly related to the Episodes. You copy?
The story of Rogue One will follow a group of rebels who steal the plans for the Death Star — which is what Darth Vader is trying to get back when he intercepts Leia at the beginning of New Hope. According to the press release from Lucasfilm president, Kathleen Kennedy, the movie “goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know.”
Who are these rebels fighting the ground war? We’ve known for a while that Felicity Jones had been cast in one of the lead roles in the movie, and that still remains true. It appears as if she’s even the leader of these rebels, and TBH, we’d most certainly follow Jones into a terrifying Death Star mission, too. But who’s really going to follow her? Can you even handle the epic cast for Rogue One?
The D23 Expo in Anaheim, California dropped the WHOLE cast on us in one big swoop. There have certainly been rumors over the last few months, but now, we’ve got the official lineup, which includes Ben Mendelsohn (Danny on Bloodline); Forest Whitaker (who’s been in literally a billion things); Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal on Hannibal); Donnie Yen (a huge martial arts superstar overseas); Riz Ahmed (Rick from Nightcrawler) and Alan Tudyk (Walsh from Firefly). No word on who any of them are actually playing — whether light side or Dark Side — so be prepared for them to go either way.
Rogue One has barely started filming, so no footage was screened at D23. BUT, the first official photo from the movie was released, and it’s time to spend a thousand hours obsessing over it.
Where are they, what’s going on, and what kind of ship is that in the background?? These are all questions that will be answered when Rogue One flies into theaters on December 16th, 2016.
