Say whaaaaat: there’s a “Star Wars” fan theory that suggests Rey is Anakin Skywalker
Out of all the Star Wars theories to awaken (sorry) over the past month following the release of Force Awakens, we’ve just found the craziest one. Try to wrap your head around this: Rey is actually a reincarnated Anakin Skywalker, who’s trying to bring balance to the Force. Again. Spoilers ahead, obviously.
This theory sounds absurd, yes. But, it’s not completely farfetched. As YouTube user manyymedia breaks it down in their fan theory video, Rey isn’t Luke’s daughter, or Han and Leia’s daughter, or Ben Kenobi’s daughter. Instead, she’s Anakin Skywalker on a quest to right his past wrongs and has come back to life in the form of a young female scavenger who is also trapped on a sand planet, just like he was once upon a time.

The easiest way to describe this theory is to compare it to Doctor Who. Like how the Doctor has regenerated time and time again, the Force’s Chosen One can do the same thing. The Chosen One just happened to first appear in the body of Hayden Christensen. Now, he’s back in the body of Daisy Ridley, who is slowly remembering his/her past memories — as we saw when Rey grabbed Anakin’s lightsaber for the first time.
Also, the reason Rey is so good at fighting, flying, and talking to droids is because these are things she learned to do as Anakin. The Force has been, for lack of a better word, suppressed in her, and it is only when she’s battling Kylo Ren and he brings up the Force, that her “awakening” happens. As manyymedia summarizes at the end, Star Wars could be setting up for an overlaying saga about birth, death, and then rebirth.
Is this theory just the right amount of crazy, or simply too crazy? Honestly, manyymedia raises some good points, and the parallels between Anakin and Rey are hard to ignore. We’ll find out for sure if Anakin = Rey and Rey = Anakin when Episode VIII opens… in a mere 691 days.
