I just want someone to love me as much as Poe loves BB-8 in Star Wars
It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good X-Wing must be in want of a droid. And obviously the best X-Wing pilot receives the best droid, which is why Poe Dameron and BB-8 are living happily together in a galaxy far, far away. Is it too much to say that these two are ultimate couple couples? Because they are. They are best friends, they are buddies, they are a shoulder to lean on when times get tough. I aspire to have everything that Poe and BB-8 have in Star Wars.
We first met this adorable duo during the Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was like, a tale of Boy and his Droid. Sure, the movie was actually about Rey coming into her powers with the Force, destroying Starkiller Base, and snuffing out the dark powers rising, but the real crux of the story was about Poe and BB-8 reuniting together after being separated on Jakku. Do you remember how BB-8 literally pushes Finn out of the way to get back to his pilot once they’ve both returned to the Resistance base? It’s heartwarming and pure. When Poe sees his droid, his face lights up like Christmas morning because his best friend is back. The pilot yells for all to hear, “BB-8, my buddy!”
If that’s not true love, I’m not sure what is.
The Last Jedi only deepens this relationship, and makes my heart ache for this kind of connection with someone else, whether pilot or droid, doesn’t even matter anymore. The latest Star Wars movie opens with the two of them off on a scary mission, and BB-8 is just not feeling it; this leads Poe to remind his friend that he should only be squeaking “happy beeps.” Happy beeps! Do you think these two give one another pep talks, and ask for happy beeps?
Poe also realizes that sometimes, if you love something, you have to let it go — and that’s why he sends BB-8 along with Finn and Rose to Canto Bight. The trio then make it onto the First Order ship. Remember when Poe asks for a mission update and literally says to this droid, “BB-8 tell me something good!”
Like, they have their own special way of communication, and it’s endearing as hell. How often do you think Poe comes home from a long day at the Resistance, kicks his feet up, and goes, “BB-8, tell me something good.”
If you think that’s actually the cutest thing between these two in the movie, it’s not. Because we haven’t even gotten to their reunion on Crait. Think of what it’s like when you see your best friend (and/or significant other) after a long stretch of time, and you’re so happy that they’re back (and survived the destruction of a First Order ship). Finn and Rose aren’t even out of the downed Imperial Shuttle before Poe is yelling “WHERE’S MY DROID?” Yeah, sure, nice to see you Finn and Rose, glad you’re both alive, but WHERE IS POE’S DROID.
Since this image isn’t available online for me to .gif it for you, let me just describe what happens next in this Star Wars movie: Poe and BB-8 race toward each other, and in lieu of embracing, Poe tickles BB-8. I repeat: Poe tickles BB-8.
One more time for the people in the back:
POE TICKLES BB-8.
He really tickles him. If BB-8 were a dog, he’d be on his back, wagging his tail around and smiling with his tongue hanging out of his mouth. But BB-8 is not a dog, he is a droid, and instead he just offers up a few HAPPY BEEPS.
These two characters have a relationship, they have a rapport, they have a deep understanding of the other. You just KNOW if BB-8 were around while Poe was mouthing off to Holdo, the droid would be like “dude, chill out.” You know they tell each other secrets and keep one another company all the time. Their relationship is beautiful, and it’s maybe the most beautiful one ever.
I just want someone to love me as much as Poe loves his spherical droid in Star Wars. Is that so much to ask?
