Today in why not: “Star Wars” might film in space

Star Wars has shot on location in the snow, in the sand, in the forest and in front of green screens before, and now they’re looking to head somewhere completely different. Star Wars wants to film out of this world, literally.

We’re 42 days past The Force Awakens, and still 685 days away from Star Wars: Episode VIII, but it’s never too soon to start thinking about Episode IX. The last movie of this latest trilogy is being handed over to Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who’s already got some BIG plans for what he wants to do. First thing, figure out how to shoot in space.

Talking to a crowd at the Sundance Film Festival, Trevorrow admitted two things: he plans to shoot the movie on film stock, not digital, and he’s also trying to figure out how to get that film high above the ground, like thousands of miles above it.

“I asked the question, ‘Is it possible for us to shoot IMAX film plates in actual space for Star Wars?’” He explained. “I haven’t gotten an answer yet, but they’ve shot IMAX in space!”

Exactly how and what Trevorrow would be shooting in outer space for Star Wars is a mystery, as with all things related to future Star Wars installments. He could just be looking to shoot the stars and maybe add in some awesome CGI ships later — or you know, he could actually take the Millennium Falcon to shoot on location, which would be pretty darn amazing.

Hopefully Trevorrow gets his answer soon, and hopefully it’s a YES, because it’s probably going to take him a while to figure out how to get BB-8 into space.
