The Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is happening, and if you strike it down, it shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine

Get the blue milk ready, we’ve got something to celebrate. If you’re hoping that there will soon be more stand-alone Star Wars movies about your favorite characters, and their adventures away from the Death Star, we’ve got some good news for you. Lucasfilm has officially started developing an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie, and yes, this IS the movie we’ve been waiting for.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, who first broke the news, the movie is happening…and that’s about all we know right now! But even just this is enough to make us excited. Obi-Wan has been a huge character throughout the Star Wars universe, and has appeared — in some form or another — in every single Star Wars movie to date. The late Sir Alec Guinness portrayed him as an actual human, Jedi Master in A New Hope. He appeared as a Force ghost in both Empire Strikes and Return of the Jedi.

Jumping back in time to the prequels, Ewan McGregor played a younger, first-padawan-then-master Obi-Wan during Phantom Menace, Attack of the Clones, and Revenge of the Sith. Obi-Wan was also a huge part of Star Wars: Clone Wars on Cartoon Network and Star Wars Rebels on Disney XD.

Oh, and don’t forget Obi-Wan’s voice — both Guinness and McGregor — appeared in Force Awakens. Clearly, the guys been around the galaxy a few times.

Currently, there is no script for the movie, but there is a director. Billy Elliot’s Stephen Daldry is set to direct (currently, but as we’ve learned, Star Wars directors can change at a moment’s notice), but if McGregor will return to his iconic role remains to be seen. He’s talked about it many times, and earlier this year told Entertainment Weekly:

"I’ve always said that I’d be happy to do [an Obi-Wan movie] if they wanted to do it. It would be a good segue between the last episode of the prequels and the new episodes. I think they’ve got films to make until the 2020s, so I don’t think it’s going to happen soon if it happens at all.

Also this is so convenient, because one of the biggest Rey Parentage Theories is that she’s a Kenobi. Funny how the timing works out, eh?

But please, no one tell Samuel L. Jackson about this yet.
