This “Star Wars” theory explains how Luke can beat Snoke — and it all has to do with his damaged hand
Now that the latest — and probably final — trailer for The Last Jedi is official here, we can finally update all our favorite conspiracy theories with nearly two and a half minutes of new footage, and more importantly, new questions.
The new trailer saw legendary Jedi Luke Skywalker — who frankly, got more screen time in The Last Jedi trailer than the entirety of The Force Awakens — overwhelmed, in awe, and a bit frightened at the strength of The Force within Rey. The trailer then seems to imply that Luke abandons Rey, who may or may not wind up joining Kylo Ren and Snoke. While jury is still out — and probably will be until December 15th — on exactly how much we’re *actually* supposed to be reading into the trailer, it’s clear that we need to be paying close attention to Luke.
Sure this latest trilogy follows Rey on her journey from Jakku scavenger to Jedi master, but it seems the OG lonely teen with The Force may still hold the key to defeating the First Order in his damaged hand.
Star Wars fans will remember when young Luke Skywalker lost his right hand in The Empire Strikes Back. The young Jedi was dueling with his then-unknown father, Darth Vader. After his rescue, Luke was then fitted with a mechno-arm prosthetic, complete with a realistic synthetic skin.
So why does his damaged hand look so different now? We’re not quite sure but YouTuber Star Wars Theory believes it could hold the key to defeating Snoke.

In the video, Star Wars Theory admits that the synthetic skin on Luke’s mechno-arm could have been burned off while Luke was struck by Emperor Palpatine’s electric shocks in Return of the Jedi. However, the Star Wars expert actually believes the key lies within known events *not* seen on screen: Namely Luke and a pre-evil Kylo Ren’s scavenging of the Galaxy for Jedi relics before the latter Jedi turns dark.
Thanks a hidden-in-plain-sight detail in the first trailer for The Last Jedi, Star Wars Theory believes Luke may be studying from the Ancient Book of the Whills — otherwise known as Journal of the Whills, an ancient recording of events during the Galactic Civil War — in order to find a way to defeat Snoke, who may just be an ancient Force user, like those who wrote the ancient book.
Using close analysis of the trailers, known Star Wars canon across the franchise, and a “mysterious emailer,” Star Wars Theory believes that Luke’s hand was further damaged — melting away the synthetic skin — during his attempt to save the Journal of the Whills, when Kylo Ren burned down the Jedi Temple. This is certainly a safe claim, considering Luke’s hand is shown emerging from what appears to the rubble of the burned Jedi Temple in a flashback.
Luke is clearly haunted by his failure to stop Kylo Ren from going over to the dark side. So can his recovery of the Journal of the Whills hold the key to defeating Snoke and the First Order? Star Wars Theory seems to think it might be.
Whether the theory is right or not, it’s certainly well-researched and compelling. It seems as though we’ll have to wait until December 15th to know for sure.
