Fear not — we’re going to learn exactly *why* Luke is in exile in “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”

Have no fear, Luke Skywalker is here! And in The Last Jedi, we’ll finally learn why he’s been hanging out all alone on top of that cliff. Director Rian Johnson gave some hints on what happens in The Last Jedi, and don’t be worried because Luke’s reason for being in exile is a huge part of the film. Oh, Luke, we’ve missed you and your brooding.

At the end of The Force Awakens, we finally see our hero, Luke Skywalker, return to the franchise — even if it’s just for like 30 seconds. It turns out he’d been hiding out in exile at an old Jedi temple. But if you were worried that Luke wouldn’t have a big role in The Last Jedi, don’t freak out. Director Rian Johnson told Entertainment Weekly that why Luke ended up on that island is a huge part of the story in the upcoming film:

“Figuring out where his head was at was the very first thing I had to do when writing the movie. I had to crack this. And it had to be something for me that first and foremost made sense. Why did Luke Skywalker go off to this island? That was the starting point, and that’s what the entire movie explores.

Thank goodness!

We all love the new Star Wars characters like Rey, Poe, and Finn, but we also missed Luke Skywalker! The Last Jedi will be in theaters December 15th and we’ll finally get some answers that The Force Awakens left us with. Oh, and some more BB-8 cause we totes miss him.
