The “Game of Thrones” creators are getting their own “Star Wars” saga, will hopefully not feature an undead ice dragon

Winter is coming to a galaxy far, far away! Lucasfilm has just announced that Game of Thrones creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are set to write and produce a series of films set within the Star Wars universe. The films will be separate from the ongoing Skywalker episodic saga and the previously announced trilogy from The Last Jedi writer-director Rian Johnson.
“David and Dan are some of the best storytellers working today, said Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, said in the announcement. “Their command of complex characters, depth of story and richness of mythology will break new ground and boldly push Star Wars in ways I find incredibly exciting.
While no release dates for Benioff and Weiss’ Star Wars films have been released, the duo revealed they’ll be working on the project as soon as the eighth and final season of Game of Thrones wraps. They said in a statement, “In the summer of 1977 we traveled to a galaxy far, far away, and we’ve been dreaming of it ever since. We are honored by the opportunity, a little terrified by the responsibility, and so excited to get started as soon as the final season of Game of Thrones is complete.”
Hey, this certainly helps us cope with the end of Game of Thrones.
While Benioff and Weiss have more than established themselves as capable of taking on an iconic franchise, we are curious to see where they’ll go with this new project.
Another thing on our minds: Emilia Clarke is already starring in the upcoming standalone, Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Gwendoline Christie is Captain Phasma in the latest trilogy, and we’re really hoping this Benioff/Weiss saga news means we’ll see more of our favorite Game of Thrones cast members crossing over into the other biggest sci-fi franchise in history. Fingers crossed.
