‘Star Wars’ is one step closer to breaking an incredible record
One by one, Star Wars: The Force Awakens has been de-throning some of the most successful movies in cinematic history when it comes to domestic gross. In this weekend alone, the newest film in the highly-revered franchise earned another $88.3 million, bumping its total domestic gross up to $740.3 million, and that’s just after nineteen days.
This sets it well ahead of its competitors, such as Jurassic World, which earned a total of $652.3 million and Titanic, which earned $658.7 million. It now sits comfortably in second place in the list of top-grossing domestic films, only behind Avatar, whose total earnings of $760.5 million Star Wars seems poised to surpass.
Not only is this record impressive on its own, but Star Wars is also doing it impressively quickly. Think about it this way: that $760.5 million earned by Avatar was accumulated in over 70 days. Star Wars has only about $20 million to go to beat that, and that’s after less than three weeks.
With a global total of $184.6 million under its belt, no matter what happens, Star Wars is sitting pretty. We should probably go see it one more time just to be sure.
