We’re shocked that Stanford rapist Brock Turner may only serve three months in jail

We’ve all either heard or read about the Stanford rape case by now. We’ve seen the details of the case played out on all our social media channels, from the statement Brock Turner wrote to the judge, to the statement the survivor made in court to Turner himself, to that same statement read on air by CNN’s Ashleigh Banfield. But now, we have more news via the Associated Press: he may only serve three months in jail — a three month reduction from his original six month sentence — as a result of good behavior.

This news is on the heels of outrage over the original six month sentence, which was initially made because “a prison sentence would have a severe impact on him.” The coverage of the case emphasized his achievements in swimming, rather than the details of his case, and used photos of him smiling.

Brock Turner’s father, Dan Turner, also penned a letter about the lasting effects of the trial on his son, with no real mention of the woman he raped or the lasting effects of trauma on her. This letter, and the general handling of the case itself, has many people saying that we need to take rape culture in our country more seriously, and that it’s on all of our shoulders — fathers included — to think about how we talk about sex, consent, and consequences of our actions. false

As it stands now, it looks as though Brock Turner will be released three months early, so long as his good behavior continues. He was booked on June 2.
