Ways to update your wardrobe for spring for zero dollars
Spring is here! You know what that means? It’s time for a wardrobe refresh. Though, not all of us have the monetary benefits to experience a Pretty Woman-esque shopping spree. Good news is, you don’t have to blow mucho dinero in order to change things up in your closet. All it takes is strategy and some creativity.
Read on for totally free ways to update your wardrobe for spring.
Closet cleanout
I know you’re like, nobody said nuthin’ ‘bout cleaning! Trust me, if it’s been a minute since you did a serious inventory of your wardrobe, there’s more than likely a cute dress or awesome tee shirt hiding in there that you’ve totally forgotten about. It’s like hunting for buried treasure or going shopping, but in your own closet!
Clothing swap time!
Now that you’ve cleaned out your wardrobe, it’s time to organize a clothing swap with your friends! You’ll be able to get rid of things you’re not so into anymore and be open to a whole new world of your friends’ closets. Maybe you’ve always had your eye on a certain cardigan your BFF had and now she’s giving it to you! SCORE!
Rethink HOW you’re wearing your clothes
Many times we’re used to wearing an article of clothing a certain way, but if you take a step back and look at it with new eyes, you can come up with inventive style techniques. A maxi skirt can could double as a strapless dress just by adding a belt while a regular button-down shirt can be tuned up by tying together the two front parts so it shows a bit of your midriff.
Make some minor (or major) modifications
Cut off sleeves of tops or trim the hem off of a pair of skinnies to reinvent them as pedal pushers! Cut the neckline of an old T-shirt for a punk scoop-neck.
Accessorize like a champ
Just as you did with your clothing, survey your accessory and jewelry collections. Try wearing them with clothing you hadn’t in the past. You’ll be surprised how layering necklaces and a brooch in the right spot can freshen things up! Add some buttons to your vintage blazer, pair a chunky necklace with a button down shirt and throw it on the same hangar so you don’t even have to think about it when you’re ready to wear them together.
Play with prints
Mix and match prints that you never thought about before. It can definitely be tricky and will take some mix mastering, but play around and have fun with it! You can also try out new colorblocking attempts.
Imaginative layering
One time, I took a white Baby Phat pussybow blouse and wore it underneath a blue ’70s pinafore dress. I had both of those items for years and never thought to wear them together. It was mind-blowing and I looked REAL CUTE. Not gonna lie.
Take some new risks
Do wild thangs! Wear lacy socks with sandals. Even something as simple as wearing double denim could be thrilling if you’ve never really done it before! Take that chambray shirt and wear it with your favorite pair of jeans. You’ll feel like the stylish denim love child of our favorite Britney and Justin memory.
