Spotify released 2018’s most-streamed artists, and the results are depressing for one very specific reason

With women like Ariana Grande and Cardi B smashing music records this year, there’s no doubt that female artists are at the top of their game. But unfortunately, the music industry continues to be dominated by men—even when it comes to streaming. Spotify has just released its list of 2018’s most-streamed artists, and not a single woman made the top five.

Drake, whose music was streamed more than 8.2 billion times, was the most-streamed artist on the list. The remaining four spots went to Post Malone, XXXTentacion, J Balvin, and Ed Sheeran (2017’s top artist). In the full list, Ariana Grande managed to barely crack the top 10, and overall, only about a quarter of the top-played artists were women.

When it came to the most-streamed groups, Imagine Dragons took the top spot, followed by K-pop band BTS, Maroon 5, Migos, and Coldplay *which earned last year’s top spot). Only one female-fronted group, Little Mix, made the full list of 25 groups.

Women did get some recognition. The streaming platform honored the top five female artists in their own category. Among female artists, Ariana Grande reigned supreme with more than three billion streams in 2018. Dua Lipa, Cardi B, Taylor Swift, and Camila Cabello rounded out the rest. Additionally, Dua Lipa’s self-titled debut album broke into the most-streamed albums category at number four, making her the only female artist with an album on the list.

Time notes that Spotify’s 2017 list had a similar disparity, with the top five artists also all men. Let’s hope next year brings a (long overdue) change of pace.
