This spider is named for the Sorting Hat from ‘Harry Potter’ and it’s actually perfect

If you’re not a fan of creepy, crawling critters then we probably can’t keep you from squealing at the mere sight of an insect, even if it’s a spider named for the Sorting Hat from Harry Potter. But if you take just a quick glimpse at the creature, you’ll probably be more intrigued than creeped out.

As Mashable reports, Godric Gryffindor’s famous Sorting Hat inspired three researchers in Mumbai to name the uniquely shaped arachnid Eriovixia gryffindori. Sorry Slytherins, Hufflepuffs, and Ravenclaws, but there’s no getting around which Harry Potter house this spider belongs to.

Not even J.K. Rowling could deny the spider’s uncanny resemblance to what is perhaps the wizard world’s most well-known accessory.

No word on this spider’s temperament, but according to what your favorite Harry Potter house says about your personality, the Eriovixia gryffindori should be an extrovert but still, the thought of an enthusiastic, outgoing spider kind of scares us, just a little bit.

Perhaps the three researchers Javed Ahmed, Rajashree Khalap and Sumukha Javagal noted that detail in the findings they published in the Indian Journal of Arachnology. However, one thing that’s more obvious is the fact that Ahmed is a huge Potterhead.

“We’re excited to have found this new spider whose shape is similar to the magical sorting hat owned by the wizard [Gryffindor],” Ahmed said in The Times of India. Apparently, the spider’s shape allows it to camouflage itself as a dried leaf to avoid predators.
