We have the next Spider-Man — It’s Tom Holland
It’s clear that America just can’t get enough of the Spider-Man movies, or, Spider-Men. Pioneered by Tobey Maguire and continued by Andrew Garfield, the role of Spider-Man is almost as iconic as then men who have played it. Which is why the casting of the next Spider-Man has been so eagerly anticipated. Wait no longer, Spidey-fans, because your new hero has arrived.
Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios have announced nineteen-year-old Tom Holland as the newest face of the much loved character. And it’s a pretty cute face, if I do say so myself.
If Tom looks familiar to you, that’s probably because you’ve seen him in things like The Impossible or Wolf Hall, or maybe as Billy Elliot on London’s West End. Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman is confident in the choice:
As great as we’re sure Tom will be a our favorite web-slinger, for some, this news does come as a disappointment. When the new film was announced, many fans crossed their fingers that this would be a chance for the franchise to become more diverse. There was a push for the role to be filled by an actor of color, for there to be some representation in an otherwise historically white-washed cast.
The film is set to come out on July 28, 2017, although some fans expect a cameo in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, whose storyline heavily features our favorite web-spinning hero. Is there a superhero who can speed up time? We need them right about now.
