There’s a super-meta Marvel Easter egg in “Spider-Man: Homecoming”
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is one big family, and in Spider-Man: Homecoming it takes on a whole new meaning. While we know the dynamic between all the Avengers, we just found out about a new MCU meta-connection that is sure to make you go “awwww.” There are some tiny Spider-Man: Homecoming spoilers below!
Spider-Man: Homecoming is the first full-length film for the latest iteration of Peter Parker’s super-hero web-slinger. Played by Tom Holland (who first showed up in Captain America: Civil War as a huge fan-boy), the film is a fun addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film further connects Spider-Man to the Avengers — but especially to Iron Man who has become his mentor and role-model. Crazy, right?!
That’s also not the only major MCU connection. In Homecoming, Peter gets a fancy new suit from Tony Stark — which of course is suped-up with a bunch of new features including a Jarvis-type assistant who can calculate distances, track bad guys, and even give romance advice. After talking to it for a while, Spidey decides that this “voice” needs a name, and calls her “Karen” — which is the perfect fit actually.
If you’re wondering why this voice is so familiar, it’s because you’ve most definitely heard her before in a Marvel movie. Karen is played by Oscar winner Jennifer Connelly…who once upon a time played Bruce Banner’s love-interest in 2003’s (very much forgotten) Hulk.
But wait! That’s not the only Marvel connection with Connelly. IRL, she is married to Paul Bettany, who is the voice of Tony’s AI, Jarvis (and more recently, the character of Vision). All around, this is a pretty cool MCU family connection.
That’s cool enough info but when you add in the fact that IRL Jennifer is married to Paul Bettany who is the voice of Tony’s AI Jarvis (and most recently Vision) it’s a pretty cool MCU family connection. “It’s Jarvis’ wife,” director Jon Watts told EW with a laugh. “It’s cool, right?”
Very cool. Who knows if there will be any future moments between the two characters but just knowing that Karen and Jarvis are married IRL is epic. Spider-Man: Homecoming will be in theaters July 7th
