So the new ‘Spider-Man’ movie will be like ‘The Breakfast Club’? Yes, please.
What’s more fun than rebooting an old franchise? Rebooting an old franchise with inspiration from one of history’s most beloved directors. Obviously.
The more we hear about the new Spider-Man movie, the more excited we get. Today’s news might be coolest yet: the film is going to be very high school-centric, a la some of our favorite ’80s movies.
“Spider-Man will be a ‘John Hughes’ movie,” Marvel exec Kevin Feige told SlashFilm.
Yes, that John Hughes: The Breakfast Club. Sixteen Candles. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. You get the idea. “‘John Hughes’ movie” sounds extreme, but I think this is Feige’s way of saying they’re going to lean heavily on traditional high school themes and play up the emotions of being a teenager. #SpiderHughes
“Some of my favorite Spider-Man arcs and Spider-Man stories, he’s in high school for a lot of it,” he continued. “We want to explore that. That also makes him very, very different from any of our other characters in the MCU, which is something else we want to explore: how unique he is when now put against all these other characters.”
Here’s what we know about the new Spider-Man so far: Tom Holland will play the title role. Jon Watts will direct. And, Feige revealed there’s probably going to be a new villain. So it’s basically going to be a Spider-Man/John Hughes mashup with some new blood, and we’re all about it.
“Right now we’re interested in seeing villains we haven’t seen before,” he said. To which I reply: bring it on. Although, I’m always down to bring back James Franco.
