Here’s how the Spice Girls really got their nicknames

By the time they were singing “Wannabe,” we already know The Spice Girls by their nicknames. In fact, most of us were probably introduced to the The Spice Girls by their nicknames instead of their real names. Were these nicknames a branding technique? Something cool and fun the gals came up with on the fly? Not so much. Mel B (aka Scary Spice) just revealed to Huff Post Live that those iconic nicknames were kind of sort of accidental. Here’s what happened.

“It was actually a lazy journalist [who] couldn’t be bothered to remember all our names, so he just gave us nicknames. And we were like, ‘Oh, well, that kind of works. I don’t mind my name. Do you like your name? Baby? Posh?’” Mel B said. “We were like, ‘Let’s just go with it.’”

Mind blown! Huff Post asked Mel B what she thinks of that Scary moniker, so-generated because she has such a big personality (not in any way, shape or form meant to imply she’s scary looking, obvs).

“I’m very kind of in-your-face,” she replied. “I was even more so back then. I was, what, 17, 18, and like, ‘What! What do you want?!’ So I guess I could have come off as Scary. But I like my name.” We like it too! Scary really helped us spice up our life zig-a-zigh AH!

If this truth bomb is making you miss The Spice Girls, we have some hopeful news: Mel B, who is now a judge on America’s Got Talent,  recently revealed she REALLY wants a reunion to happen. Appearing on the Meredith Vieira Show, the former Spice Girl stated, “‘Do you know what, there’s nothing to really spill because nothing has been announced, nothing is official. Yes we are in talks because it’s our 20th anniversary and I want something to happen…It had better.”

She added, “‘I’m forcing them a little bit. I’ve been saying it for five years, ‘we are reuniting, aren’t we? are we? we are? We need to!’”

Um, we’re totally with you on that, Mel B.
