Since the Schwartz is strong with this one, “Spaceballs 2” *might* really happen
Star Wars: The Force Awakens brought the iconic sci-fi franchise to a whole new generation. And now, thanks to its massive success (along with, of course, Rogue One‘s incredible popularity), another classic space movie might get a reboot. Ahem, a Star Wars reboot. Mel Brooks admitted he’s considering making a Spaceballs sequel, and that is comedy music to our ears.
The original Spaceballs came out in 1987, and rode the coattails of the Star Wars craze at the time. Seeing as how we’ve all gone Star Wars crazy again, it seems appropriate that the spoof creators are considering bringing their zany parody back to life.
The news came out almost accidentally. During a recent screening of Young Frankenstein, Mel Brooks took some time to answer audience questions. One audience member spoke for all of us when they asked the comedic genius about a new Spaceballs hitting theaters.
Much to everyone’s surprise, Brooks admitted that there has been some interest from MGM in revisiting the classic comedy.
"MGM is slightly interested in doing it because of Star Wars Rogue One and The Force Awakens and the new Star Wars explosion. So they think maybe, so we’re talking, who knows."
Sure, that’s not a guarantee. But just the fact that Brooks is even in talks with the studio about revisiting the parody is pretty exciting. After all, a totally new generation of viewers became interested in all things Star Wars thanks to the new movies. So they’ll undoubtedly continue that interest in things that poke fun at the franchise, too.
The original Spaceballs cast was packed with some of the funniest stars on the planet. Some of them, like John Candy and Joan Rivers, have sadly passed away. But many of the film’s stars, including Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman, could at least make cameos in the new movie.
Back in 2013, Rick Moranis opened up in an interview that he and Mel Brooks discussed the possibility of making Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II. At the time, the new Star Wars franchise had not yet premiered. So, despite the hilarious name and movie concept, it never got made.
But now that Star Wars is back in action and more beloved than ever, this other sequel could actually go down.
And that’s pretty exciting.
Much like the Star Wars reboot itself, the new Spaceballs would likely have to have a major time jump in it. The unforgettable original characters could act alongside new comedy heroes to make a new generation laugh at all sorts of goofy antics.
We really hope this happens. Until then, may the Schwartz be with all of us.
