Sophie Turner apparently couldn’t wash her hair while filming Game of Thrones, and what in the seven hells?
Over the course of Game of Thrones, Sophie Turner has gone through quite the evolution as Sansa Stark. The eldest Stark has grown from a girl willing to marry Joffrey Baratheon (shudder) to the Lady of Winterfell. And through (almost) all of it, she’s maintained her signature fiery mane. In a January 16th interview with InStyle, Turner shared some secrets about Sansa’s legendary hair, and it turns out that at some points during filming, washing her hair was off-limits.
When interviewer Erin Lukas asked Turner about a rumor that male cast members on the show were banned from using shampoo, the actress confirmed that she, too, had the same restrictions. But she did acknowledge that her hair stayed clean for a few seasons (because Sansa’s a lady, after all).
"Well, for the first few seasons I was allowed to wash my hair because I was an aristocratic young girl," Turner told Lukas. "Towards Season 5 they started asking me to not wash my hair and it was really disgusting."
As i f that weren’t gross enough, Turner also shared that when snow machines were being used on set, the fake snowflakes would “get stuck in the grease.” Um, ew.
To be fair, it makes sense that Sansa wouldn’t shower regularly in Seasons 5 and 6. She was, after all, busy fleeing from her abuser and trying to make it back home to Winterfell.
The days of greasy hair have now passed. Turner has previously shared that constantly dying her naturally blonde hair almost caused it to fall out, so starting in Season 7, she began wearing a wig to play Sansa. Turner’s hair is currently a platinum blonde that would make even the Mother of Dragons jealous.
It turns out that even the nobles of Westeros have bad hair days. Game of Thrones returns for its final season on April 14th.
