Songs to rock out (with your socks out) to

Summer is here, exams are over and the winter blues are officially a thing of the past. Summer is a time of exploration and self-expression and what better way to embrace those things than with a new playlist to get you the right mood? It’s time to shake off winter’s cruel nip and spring’s massive finals anxiety and indulge in some rock and pop-punk music in order to get into the I-am-smart-strong-confident-and-want-to-go-to-Warped-Tour vibe that will guarantee to pump up your adrenaline and make you want to make the most of the summer break.

New to the world of non-Top 20 music? Have no fear. This playlist will introduce you to some great artists and instantly get you pumped for the day.

Joan Jett – “Bad Reputation”

Probably the greatest song ever made (in my very humble but very, very serious opinion), Bad Reputation will make you want to start fighting with your sexist history teacher and transport you back to your Freaks and Geeks phase, when you wanted to become Lindsay Weir because you had a crush on “bad boy” drummer Nick Andopolis (not like this is from personal experience or anything… it’s all totally hypothetical).

The Undertones – “Teenage Kicks”

Whether you know this song because of One Direction, Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging, or your mom’s vinyl collection, everyone who loves this song loves it for the same reason: TEENAGE. KICKS. Who doesn’t love being a teenager? Everything is new and weird and every subtle gesture can turn into something huge and romantic once you’ve spent an entire night thinking about it (again, definitely not from personal experience). This is a song to fall in love to.

5 Seconds of Summer – “Good Girls”

I tried to write the reasons why you would love this song whilst listening to it but I started to swoon so hard that I had to stop writing for a few minutes, pull my hair out of its ponytail and just let myself be absorbed by the Aussie, pop-punk vibes. (Fun fact: The title of this article may or may not be called “Rock Out With Your Socks Out” due to the name of their next headline tour… What can I say! I’m a 5SOS fan! And you can’t stop me! Bye, haters!).

Blink-182 – “Feeling This”

This one is for when you don’t mind ignoring some mildly creepy lyrics and just want to air drum the day away (this one is all about the drums, honestly, it’s so good and it makes me want to punch my fist through a wall).

The Offspring – “You’re Gonna Go Far Kid”

If you weren’t angsty enough, here’s some more angst!

Stevie Nicks – “Edge of Seventeen”

I don’t know if this song means so much to me because I myself am on the edge of seventeen and thus feel like I have some special spiritual bond with Stevie Nicks or if it’s simply because this song is a PIECE OF ART, but nevertheless this song will unleash your inner hippie witch.

The Pretty Reckless – “Heaven Knows”

For when you’re being under-appreciated and everything sucks, let a leather-clad rock goddess (namely Taylor Momsen) show you the way to the dark side.

Fountains of Wayne – “Stacy’s Mom”

I sang this song to a girl called Stacy once and then she told me that she wasn’t going to be my friend anymore ? Learn from my mistake, but still enjoy the song.

Green Day – “Jesus of Suburbia”

I pretty much use this song to end every playlist that I make. Nine minutes of genius, societal criticisms, and amazing music. An awesome song to rock out with your, erm, socks out to.
