Let the rain fall down — songs for April showers
Welcome to This Week’s Playlist, where we look to current events for some melodic curation inspiration. Tune in every Monday for a mix of news, commentary, and of course, music.
We’re out of the woods of winter, but before we get to the pleasant parts of spring, we’ve got to get through the rain — more specifically, the April showers that touch down around this time of year.
A question I’ve always had, though, is how legitimate is this “April showers” phenomenon? Yes, it’s one of those rhymes you grow up believing as fact, but that’s how I felt about “Ring around the rosie” until I learned that it was about the plague, Until someone crunches the numbers on average rainfall during the month (I’m calling “not it”), we’ll have to take the moniker at face value, and that’s just as well: Bring on the rain, and with it the inimitable feeling of the cold clean, the wash-away, the clouds breaking to let in the sun.
