This song was written for Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher

Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher’s lives were celebrated at a public memorial service on Saturday, at the Forrest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles. Singer/songwriter James Blunt wrote the most beautiful and emotional song for Reynolds and Fisher, and it was played at the memorial — bringing everyone to tears.

Fisher passed away back in December, and her mom died just one day after. Their deaths have been tremendously hard to grasp for their family members, friends, and fans. Blunt is one of those friends.

His newest album The Afterlove is an emotional journey all on its own, but “Courtney’s Song” hits home especially hard. Of course, it hits home even harder now that we know the song was written specifically for Fisher and Reynolds — two people he considered to be his dear friends.

When talking to Entertainment Tonight last week, Reynold’s son Todd Fisher revealed that his sister was good friends with Blunt.

"The last lyric in the song, it's a beautiful song, is, 'I'm here to let you know. I'm here to let you go.' And it's powerful," he said. "The simplicity of his songs is pretty amazing. It's not like it's [got] complicated lyrics but something about how he strings all this together is beautiful."

Whether you are mourning the loss of Fisher and Reynolds, or you’re grieving the loss of someone close to you, the song cuts deep.

Take a listen, and prepare to shed some tears…

The lyrics are incredibly universal and sum up exactly how it feels to lose someone so suddenly. “We live, we breathe. We hope, we bleed. We love, we lose, we die.”
