Someone stole 20 tons of Nutella, and we have so many questions

Most of us remember our first experience with Nutella. While it reminds us a little of peanut butter in consistency, the chocolate and hazelnut goodness is truly in its own category. When we heard that someone stole 20 tons of Nutella that was in a refrigerated truck in Germany, we could kind of understand. We mean, stealing is wrong on all levels, but sometimes Nutella makes people do some crazy things.

The thief (or thieves, as it’s not yet clear who performed the heist) also got away with a bunch of Kinder eggs from the refrigerated trailer. Also stolen? The trailer itself. The robbery took place between August 12th and 13th.

So, how much was that Nutella worth, exactly? According to a statement released by the police, the total loss was valued at $82,000.

They’re making sure the community looks out for anyone who might be selling the chocolate in a suspicious way.

"Anyone offered large quantities (of chocolate) via unconventional channels should report it to the police immediately," the statement read.

Funny enough, this isn’t the only time that a large quantity of Nutella has gone missing. Just last year, the “King of Car Thieves,” Bill Dhaliwal, was busted and police found about $30,000 worth of Nutella in his possessions. That’s a lot of spread.

Of course, there’s a chance that the robbers in Germany might not have been after the chocolate — they could have been after the truck itself. But still, food thefts actually aren’t as uncommon as you might think. For example, Food & Wine noted that not too long ago, a similar story came out about someone in Arkansas stealing a truck filled with Little Debbie snack cakes.

Hopefully the police can get some answers soon. In the meantime, we’ll be snacking on some Nutella while we wait for more information.
