Solange is canceling a New Year’s Eve performance for this scary reason
After trying hard to find the words, Solange said she had to cancel a performance due to a recent diagnosis. “It’s so important to me for the people in South Africa, a place that has tremendous meaning to me and that has given me SO SO MUCH, to know why I won’t be performing at Afro Punk this NYE,” the singer said on Instagram.
Afropunk is both a website that celebrates music, fashion, and art, as well as the name of a big festival that takes place in a few major cities around the globe, including Johannesburg, South Africa. Solange was one of the many names expected to take the stage this December.
However, her fans will likely be more than understanding, as it seems that Solange has had a difficult few months.
“The past five months I have been quietly treating, and working through an Autonomic Disorder,” she said. “[It’s] been a journey that hasn’t been easy on me…Sometimes I feel cool, and other times not so cool at all.”
The singer didn’t get specific about her exact diagnosis but used a term that could describe one of many disorders that affect the nervous system. This isn’t the first time that the disorder has caused her to cancel shows — just last month, she had to cancel a Florida date due to health concerns.

"I can’t thank Afro Punk enough for their support, and to all of the other festivals this past summer/fall who have known about my health, kept it confidential, and gone out of their way to make me feel supported while doing these shows," the singer wrote. "As a part of the self care that I’ve tried to encourage this past year, it needs to start with myself, and I’m looking forward to doing a better job of this 2018."
Afropunk also made sure to release a statement about the news, stressing that they thought it was more than important for Solange to get well.
We hope that Solange is able to spend the rest of the year recovering. We know she’s going to go right back to delivering amazing performances in 2018.
