Solange had a flawless response when someone called her son “ugly”
Earlier this week, incomparable goddess Solange Knowles posted a picture to Instagram of her son, Julez, dressed in a spot-on LL Cool J costume for Halloween. The whole thing was totally epic and very adorable; and the majority of commenters responded accordingly — i.e., with endless gushing and love.
However, not everyone was so kind. It’s no secret that for all the immeasurable good of the Internet and social media, it has its fair share of cruelty, too — and one of these less-than-appropriate comments happened to catch Knowles’ attention.
“So cute but at the same time he ugly,” the user wrote, tagging one of her friends.
For those unfamiliar, Knowles is actually pretty private on social media compared to her sister, and shares very few photos of her son, precisely in order to keep the trolls at bay. The singer and superstar was swift to respond to this comment, and rightly pointed out that it’s never appropriate to call someone ugly, especially a child.
“Jussst as I thought it was safe to share pictures again, a young’n like you decides to use her time to spread ugliness,” Knowles wrote. “I don’t fault you, I can only imagine why you would feel the need to say such things, but thanks again for being a reminder that out of all the love and wonderful energy shared, that when I open up a space for an innocent beautiful being like my boy to be criticized and judged, that I WILL most likely respond, and that he receives enough love and celebration at home that it’s just not worth it to go down this road.”
“I hope that this really resonates with you and you make better decisions in the future towards how you use your words towards innocent children,” she concluded. “And @ro.rxd get ya friend because this could have truly gone south if I was in the wrong mood.”
Since then, Knowles has removed the photo from her Instagram — and we can’t say we blame her. (She did, however, post an adorable video of her son dancing on Instagram yesterday afternoon.) While there’s a certain level of anonymity to the Internet, it’s important we not forget that what we say online can still be hurtful. It’s never OK to be unnecessarily mean or cruel, and Knowles proves that love and kindness always win out.
We couldn’t be more grateful to the star for turning a mean comment into an opportunity to remind the world that our words have power, and that we should always use that power for good.
