Sofia Vergara says social media can majorly hurt women’s body image and self confidence

Sofia Vergara got real recently in chat with People about the pressure to be perfect encouraged on social media platforms.

She talked about how the hypervisibility caused by social media can be detrimental to women’s self confidence, saying, “I think it’s so hard, not just for me, but for every woman. Now with the social media and all the craziness with the internet … you see how women look everywhere in the world. It’s very overwhelming.”

Especially with the rise of wellness and fitness culture on Instagram, it can be hard not to compare your lifestyle to other women’s habits. The actress explained how it makes her feel, saying, “It’s like, ‘Oh, I should exercise more. Should I eat less? Should I cook more greens? Should I put more makeup on?’ It’s a lot.”

It’s so great to see a super beautiful (inside AND out!) and super accomplished woman like Vergara speaking out about the potential negative impact of obsessing over social media. It proves that even the most beautiful among us aren’t immune to letting competitiveness of the social media world get to them.

While some are empowered by social media, it’s important to recognize that social media can be used for good, and for evil. Remember that your beauty (and your value!) isn’t determined by how many likes you get on your Instagram photos.

And if you are empowered by social media, keep taking those selfies and be shameless! After all, at the end of the day it’s all about self love.
