Sofia Vergara got a mammogram — and documented it on Instagram to encourage women to get tested for breast cancer

Sofia Vergara is the best for many reasons. The hilarious actress is in one of our favorite shows, and a few of our favorite movies. And now, she’s taking a stand against breast cancer. Vergara documented her mammogram on Instagram in order to encourage others to do get checked for breast cancer. With new technology — 3D mammograms are now a thing — and the uprise in celebrities bringing awareness, it’s hard to avoid your mammogram. This isn’t the first time Vergara has spoken about her exam, and Sarah Michelle Gellar has also shared a mammogram pic.

So, listen: Breast health is important.

Vergara clearly prioritizes her health, as we all should. In 2016, Vergara posted a picture to remind us that annual mammograms are key for women over 40.

Vergara has also discussed her previous diagnosis of thyroid cancer when she was in her 20s.

"I was very young, and when they tell you that word, it’s like, ‘What are you talking about?' You always think, ‘death.’ You don’t — that’s all you think when they tell you that. So it was — it was pretty scary," she said on Nightline in 2011.

The American Cancer Society suggests that women should start considering yearly mammograms by age 40. And that they should commit to yearly mammograms for ages 45 through 54. After 55, women can get mammograms less frequently, or they can continue yearly screenings. Younger women may want to start getting mammograms before 40 if they have certain risk factors, such as a family history of breast cancer.

We appreciate people with a platform reminding us that our health is important, and that being proactive is beneficial in the long-run.

Thank you, Sofia Vergara, for using your Instagram platform and wonderful voice to keep reminding us to take care of ourselves.
