PSA: ‘SNL’ reminds women to just say what they REALLY want to say
As it turns out, honesty really is the best policy. Not being honest about things can get us into situations we really just don’t feel like being in. Like, do I want to hang out with an old middle school acquaintance I haven’t talked to in 20 years just because she moved to the city I live in? No, I really don’t, but I guess I can show her around town for a day. Can your sick kids pet my dog? I don’t particularly want germy hands all over something I cuddle with, but they seem like they really want to, so that’s fine. Do I want to go halfsies on a meal with you? Actually, no. I want an entire delicious burrito all to myself, but you asked nicely, so sure.
WHAT? This is crazy behavior! Why do we do these things to ourselves? Why are we not honest about things we’d be much happier being honest about? Because we’re too nice, and avoiding awkwardness is easier than honesty.
SNL has illustrated this pheNOmeNOn (sorry, had to) in the best way. With Sara Bareilles’ “Brave” as motivation, the hilarious ladies of SNL remind women of how liberating and intoxicating it feels to “say what you wanna say”. They do it by literally saying what they want to say, and it’s pure gold.
