“Saturday Night Live” aired a gorgeous goodbye tribute to Obama that left us sobbing

From Aziz Ansari’s heartwarming-slash-hilarious opening monologue to Kate McKinnon’s Chicago-inspired Kellyanne Conway dance, January 21st’s Saturday Night Live was an all-around winner, to cap off a week where we really, truly needed it.

And two months after “Hillary Clinton’s” rendition of “Hallelujah” left us speechless, we really shouldn’t have been surprised to see an SNL song capable of bringing us to tears — but that’s exactly what Cecily Strong and Sasheer Zamata did with their goodbye to Barack Obama in the form of “To Sir, With Love” with lyrics altered to fit our 44th President.

At the end of the show, a black-and-white photo of Obama filled the screen, and a solo Strong took the stage to sing the theme from the 1967 movie of the same name starring Sidney Poitier. Zamata soon joined her, and when they sang “as you leave, I know that I am losing my best friend, a friend who taught me right from wrong and weak from strong,” it’s hard to imagine a dry eye in the house — especially not from Strong, who was visibly holding back tears throughout the entire performance.

When they finished the number, the women presented Obama with a “World’s Greatest President” mug, with Zamata adding, “Thank you. Don’t go.”

We’re still crying 12 hours later … but also so, so grateful to Strong, Zamata, Ansari, and the rest of the SNL gang for a night of poignant, powerful comedy, and for a fitting goodbye to our dynamite 44th President.
