Snapchat’s new Snap Map feature could be dangerous

Let’s face it: Snapchat hasn’t been on a lot of people’s “to check” lists lately. Between the horrible Snapchat update that kept many from using the app to that inappropriate Chris Brown ad that upset Rihanna, it’s been rough for the company thus far into 2018. And now, there’s a new feature that has us tilting our heads. This week, Snapchat introduced Snap Map Explore, which can be seen as invasive.

According to Mashable, the Map Explore function allows users to see what their friends are doing via automatically updated statuses. When you click on the map, you’ll be able to tell if someone’s on a plane, or visiting a certain location or landmark, depending on what geofilter they’ve used recently. Of course, it’s totally up to you whether or not you decide to share these updates with friends, so you’re, fortunately, still in control of what they see from you.

Now, you can view your own status by tapping “settings” at the top of the map. From the next screen, you can check out your status, as well as who has seen it, and you can choose to delete it if you don’t want it out there anymore. Keep in mind that your status will only update when your app is open, and that you can always go into Ghost Mode if you don’t want to be seen (which is likely what we’ll be doing).
