This is what a giant frozen ocean wave looks like #slushiewaves
For everyone out there living in semi-warm climates, please continue to think of your friends in the North East. New England especially. The region is still dealing with plummeting temperatures and the ever looming threat of snow, and seriously is it ALMOST summer yet? Though the temperatures are slowly starting to rise (to like, a balmy 20°) there’s still more ice and snow than anyone knows what to do with. Things that normally don’t freeze are completely frozen over, like the actual ocean. Like, the Atlantic Ocean. It’s just full of snow and ice right now, bringing us a strange sight that can only be describe as a “slushie wave.”
Nantucket Island off the coast of Massachusetts is best known for its beautiful summers, and that’s where Jaws was filmed, too. But now, it’s so cold, the once pristine ocean waves are splashing ashore and they look like complete slush. Nantucket photographer, Jonathan Nimerfroh, happened to be walking along the beach when he spotted this strange sight and started snapping pictures. He then sent the images to the local news station, and the chief meteorologist there, Eric Fisher, commented that “It looks like a big Slurpee rolling ashore.” Probably the best wave analogy ever made.
Yeah, the ocean does kind of look like a giant 7-11 Big Glup rolling in. But that’s what’s happening because it’s still so cold the ocean is freezing. Some of the waves are almost completely frozen, yet still rolling right along. Nimerfroh told Stay Wild that “the day after I took these [the ocean] actually froze up the shoreline for 200 yards out. Solid ice.” Absolutely crazy. And also freezing.
So pretty, but just looking at these waves makes me want to bundle up in a cozy blanket and maybe drink some super hot tea. Mind you,. I’m all about Slurpees, but maybe on 12° days.
