Charlotte Greenie the two-toed sloth moves to Denver and finds love. Awwww.

The Denver Zoo has welcomed a new animal to its family, and she’s a super sweet brown-eyed beauty. Charlotte Greenie (love that name!), a Linnaeus’s two-toed sloth, arrived at the zoo in June. She’s been adapting to her new home quietly in private, but recently moved into the zoo’s Bird World enclosure where visitors can now see her moving about the tree branches. Albeit suuuuuuper slowwwwwly, because two-toed sloths have the distinction of being the world’s slowest animal.

Two-toed sloths live in treetops, even mating and giving birth in trees. They’re known for the powerful grip of their two long claws, which give them their name. Sloths are so slow-moving and sedentary that sometimes green algae grows on their furry coats, which can also act as camouflage in the wild. We’re glad, because we don’t see them faring too well if they ever needed to make a quick getaway. Also…green algae? We’re beginning to see where Charlotte’s surname came from.

Charlotte’s move to Denver is part of the Association of Zoos and Aquariums’ (AZA) Species Survival Plan (SSP), and the hope is that she’ll be a mating companion for the zoo’s resident male sloth, Elliot. The two seem to be getting along just peachy, even curling up to sleep together, which is great, considering this was an arranged marriage and all. Here they are, just “hanging out” together:

Awwww!

At 24 years old, Elliot is five years older than Charlotte (ooh, an older man!) and has a reputation for being super chill (being a sloth and all). So no worries, Charlotte. Elliot seems like a catch.

As for Charlotte, zoo officials describe her as curious and friendly and say she enjoys eating fruit and sleeping. Lots and lots of sleeping. Sloths typically sleep anywhere from 15 to 20 hours a day. (Lucky!)

Something tells us this is a match made in heaven.
