Our first look at Sigourney Weaver as the “Defenders” villain is here, and it’s giving us lady badass feels
After the success of its first three Netflix series, Marvel knew it would need to create a pretty spectacular bad guy for their superhero team-up — which is why our first look at Sigourney Weaver as the Defenders villain has us thrilled. Because if anyone believably inspire Daredevil (Charlie Cox), Jessica Jones (Krysten Ritter), Luke Cage (Mike Colter), and Iron Fist (Finn Jones) to get over their own damn egos and team up for once, it’s Ripley from Alien in a power suit.
In the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly, which features the four heroes on its cover, showrunner Marco Ramirez called Weaver’s character, Alexandra, an “utter badass.”
“Sigourney is the kind of person you can buy as the smartest person in the room, who you can also buy as a person holding a flamethrower,” he continued. “Her character is a very powerful force in New York City. She’s everything Sigourney is: sophisticated, intellectual, dangerous.”
Ramirez was reticent to reveal much else, but he did note that there was a whole lot of careful discussion surrounding what sort of villain they wanted to write for Defenders, being that the Netflix heroes thus far have fought corrupt businessmen (and women), a mind-controlling rapist, a psychotic, powersuit-wearing arms dealer, and mystical evil ninjas all on their own.
“We knew it would take something massive to pull these four characters from their individual worlds to work together,” he said. “But also small enough that it felt like it existed in our world.”
This meant creating someone with no comic book history, but Ramirez swears Alexandra will bring the same sort of “intellectual sophistication” to the fight that Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk brings to Daredevil.
And we don’t know anything about what she’s doing to New York City or how it will bring the squad together yet, but we do know where they’ll all first meet: in a hallway. Of course.
EW writes of their time on set,
"Each Defender has arrived separately at the offices of Midland Circle (a name that should sound familiar to Daredevil fans as the shady operation behind a giant, literal plot hole in season 2), and none of them expected to cross paths. But before they can properly meet and greet, the four have wound up trapped in the middle of a corridor and must brawl their way past a group of enemies."
This sounds awesome, and we truly hope this means we’ll finally get an answer to the aforementioned question so strangely left unanswered in Daredevil Season 2: Why were the ninjas of The Hand digging a giant hole that was brought up once then never, ever mentioned again?
If it’s at Sigourney Weaver’s bidding, all is forgiven. And we’re suddenly very, very onboard.
