We are STILL obsessed with Sia’s ‘California Dreamin’ cover
Is there anything Sia CAN’T do? The singer/songwriter/woman responsible for making Maddie Ziegler a household name has covered The Mamas and The Papas’ “California Dreamin’” for the upcoming film, San Andreas. And it’s really, REALLY good.
Sia is no stranger to providing vocals for films. Just last year, the Australian singer covered “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile,” for Annie and cowrote the big original song in this week’s upcoming Pitch Perfect 2. We think she’s outdone herself here, though.
Sia always has a way of making things her own, and this cover is no exception. The original is a nostalgic ditty, romanticizing the west coast and the carefree lifestyle the singers have left behind. Sia’s rendition, however, is tinged with a greater sense of loss, which is fitting for the upcoming disaster film starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson.
It may not be a traditional summer club banger, but something tells me Sia’s cover complete with a sweeping orchestra and harrowing vocals will be a surprise smash for summer 2015. Anyone else feeling a remix a la Lana Del Rey’s “Summertime Sadness”? Let’s hope so.
