Everyone has gone “off the rails” in the new Shrill Season 2 trailer, and we love every second

This post contains spoilers for Shrill Season 1.

Update, January 14th, 10:45 a.m. ET: Hulu just dropped a new trailer for Shrill Season 2, and things are getting weird. Like, Ryan meeting Annie’s parents weird. This isn’t one of those high school sitcoms where the parents seemingly don’t exist. From the looks of the new trailer, Annie’s parents, as well as BFF Fran’s parents, are going to be way more present.

Plus, it does look like Annie will be doing some reporting in Season 2, even if it’s on the life of a nude cyclist. And she may be getting paid in RadioShack gift cards? So maybe everyone is going off the rails this season. But Annie has a poignant response: “I’m not off the rails, I am the rails.” Noted.

Shrill Season 2 premieres on Hulu January 24th.

Update, December 4th, 3:35 p.m. ET: Hulu just dropped the trailer for Shrill Season 2, and from the looks of it, Annie will continue breaking stuff and taking names in the new season. Honestly, we were expecting nothing less.

The end of Shrill Season 1 gave us hope for future Annie, who’s played by SNL-star Aidy Bryant. Annie chose to leave her troll behind (after smashing his car window, naturally) and walked away looking far more self-assured. But she’ll still have to face some of the decisions she made in Season 1, like quitting her job and not quitting on her unreliable boyfriend.

Yes, Ryan is still with us in Season 2—but so is our fave BFF Fran, played by Lolly Adefope. According to a press release from Hulu, Annie, her mother, and Fran will all be journeying on a “path to self-discovery” this season. So we’re just hoping for a lot more of that and a lot less of Ryan this time around. Although, Ryan does seem to be providing in at least one area. Ahem, see the trailer below for a steamy scene.

Here’s hoping Annie gets everything she deserves—including a job that pays in money, not gift cards—in Shrill Season 2.

Original post, November 4th: Pretty much immediately after we watched Shrill, the body-positive Hulu series based on author Lindy West’s 2016 memoir of the same name, we were more than ready for a second season. The series was renewed for a second season in April, but we hadn’t heard much about it all spring and summer. At long last, star Aidy Bryant has revealed some details about Shrill Season 2, and it turns out we won’t have to wait too long to catch up with Annie and her pals.

On Monday, November 4th, Bryant took to Instagram to share that eight new episodes of the show will premiere on Hulu on Friday, January 24th, writing in her caption, “I cannot wait for you to see!!!”

Along with the release date, Bryant shared some stills from the upcoming second season, and it seems that her best friend and roommate, Fran, as well as her boyfriend, Ryan, are both back. But according to a synopsis Hulu sent to HelloGiggles, things don’t stay copacetic for long.

Apparently in the episodes ahead, “Annie realizes that quitting her job was a hasty move,” and “things aren’t perfect with Annie’s mom either.” She also faces more relationship struggles with Ryan as she seems to move ahead in her career and he doesn’t. Meanwhile, Fran is going through a breakup of her own. “This season Annie is no longer the doormat she once was,” the synopsis says, “but it’s not as easy as she thought to get what she always imagined she wanted.”

Hulu also shared some first-look photos from the upcoming season—and yes, the incredible, colorful fashion is back.

There also seems to be a heavy dose of the female friendship between Annie and Fran that we loved so much in Season 1, so we’re stoked.

Shrill fans are understandably excited about the show’s return, and perhaps not-so-patiently waiting for January, when the new season will drop.
