WANT/NEED: An anti-anxiety blanket that’s all the rage these days, and more stuff you want to buy
Welcome to Want/Need, a daily roundup of the things our Deputy Editor, Emily Popp, is currently coveting. It might be a pair of pink leather loafers that make her feel like she’s got her s*#t together, or a pool float in the shape of an avocado (because she’s not over the novelty pool float trend). Or maybe it’s as random as, like, dryer sheets. Basically this is all the stuff she’s obsessed with. Poppy’s picks, if you will.
My Calm Blanket
Seemingly overnight, I started seeing ads for “calm blankets” pop up everywhere. A what blanket, you ask? Basically the new fad is weighted blankets that are meant to help with anxiety and falling asleep. It’s kind of the same concept behind those vests you put on dogs when there’s a thunderstorm and they’re freaking out. At first I thought these blankets were bogus. But I’m a very light sleeper and have difficulty falling asleep, so the more I thought about it, the more I realized…there might be something to this. Worth a shot. So I tried out the “My Calm Blanket,” which comes in four weights depending on your size (I got the 10-pound blanket). And 10 pounds may not seem like a lot, but on a blanket—it’s heavy! At first when I slipped under it in bed, I was like, okaaaay, this feels comfortable and soft but I don’t know if it’s going to actually do anything or help me sleep? It’s just a heavy blanket.
I was texting with a friend who asked if the blanket worked, and let’s just put it this way: I didn’t respond to him until the next morning because I feel asleep. Y’all, this sleep blanket works. Or it did for me, at least. I think it was the extra pressure, especially on my chest, that helped lull me into sleep faster than normal. I think if you’re the type of person who likes taking baths to relax, you’ll probably love this calm blanket. Baths help with stress because they’re basically the closest thing to being back in the womb, right? And this sleep blanket creates that same type of “safe space” feeling. Look, did this blanket cure me of all my existential dread? No. But it definitely chills me out while I’m watching Netflix, and it did in fact help me fall asleep faster, which is invaluable. I’ve used it every night since I got it and I’ve already convinced a few people to get their own. I went from a skeptic to a full sleep blanket believer.
Heyday Customized Facial
When I lived in NYC, my apartment was right around the corner from a Heyday facial shop. It was one of my favorite spots to pop in and get a facial because of their super reasonable, non-exorbitant prices (starting at $65!) and fab AF facials. When I moved to Los Angeles, I lamented that I couldn’t get my Heyday facials anymore, but then lo and behold, one just opened up on Beverly Blvd. in L.A…right around the corner from my apartment. Kismet. I went in for a classic, 50-minute facial, which focused on deep cleansing, boosting my skin’s hydration and getting a healthy glow. The service also includes extractions—which is actually my favorite part of the facial process, TBH.
Some people find it uncomfortable, but Joanne, my aesthetician, used a special tool that got all the gunk out of my pores and I barely felt anything while it was happening. I also loved the experience, because Joanne added a sort of meditative process at the beginning, where I breathed deeply and imagined “an empty circle filling up with colors of the rainbow,” which really helped me relax and unwind fully. I walked out feeling fresh as a daisy, with bright and clear skin. Sometimes after facials I have little bit of redness (which is normal), but my skin was even and radiant, no redness even right afterwards. I also had a little zit on my chin that one hundred percent disappeared within hours of my appointment. Miracles!
Madewell Ruffle-Strap Cami Top in Gingham Check
I’m a sucker for gingham print, and this sweet little ruffle-strap tank from Madewell is the perfect summer top, IMO.
Skylar Capri Perfume
I typically gravitate towards floral fragrances, but recently I’ve been very into citrus scents. My current favorite? Skylar’s “Capri” fragrance. It’s this gorgeous mix of bergamot, neroli, grapefruit and blood orange. Just a few spritzes and I feel like I’m drinking sparkling wine in a boat on the Amalfi Coast. A true summer fragrance should be effortlessly light and bright—and Capri hits all the right notes, literally.
JAGGAR Bijou Patent Mules
Ooo, these are just the loveliest work-to-drinks flats.
