Pants are going to be big in 2020. Both literally and figuratively. Harry Styles ended 2019 by demonstrating just how incredible wide-legged Gucci sailor pants could be on the cover of his latest album, Fine Line. It’s an election year, so there will be no shortage of pantsuits. And the great debate over low-rise jeans and their imminent return in the new year set the internet on fire. But if 2019 taught us anything, it’s that anything goes these days, which includes the opposite of pants: no pants.

Instead of pants, celebrities have recently been opting for tall snakeskin print boots. Ariana Grande was obviously a trailblazer in the no-pants movement, but snakeskin, the breakout animal print of the year, really helped bring the trend to the mainstream.

Chrissy Teigen wore tall snakeskin boots with an oversized cardigan. Solange wore a snakeskin bodysuit with tall snakeskin boots to the Met Gala. Bella Hadid keeps wearing them with everything from sweater dresses to mini skirts. Jennifer Lopez has worn the trend on the red carpet more than a handful of times.

Knee-high and over-the knee snakeskin boots make the perfect replacement for pants because they cover up a majority of your legs. They also make it easy to prolong the lifespan of your spring, summer and even fall wardrobe pieces into the bitter cold months of winter. But what makes them truly worthy of replacing an item of clothing as essential as pants is the fact that they’re statement making. You could wear them with a potato sack if you really wanted and you’d still look fierce. Not even the most vintage pair of Levi’s can do that.
